Club Rules

Welcome!

The Milton Abbot Centenary Club exists for one simple reason: good company, good conversation, and good times. Here's how we keep things running smoothly while having fun together.

1. Joining the Club

  • Anyone 18 or over with a connection to Milton Abbot is welcome to join us.
  • Just have a chat with an existing member who can introduce you to the committee.
  • There's a one-off joining fee of £10 per person, or £15 per couple plus first year membership fees of £25 per person or £35 per couple.
  • Everyone who joins us between April and May of 2026 will be recognized as a Founding Member - you're helping to create something special!
  • Any subsequent application is subject, under terms of our license, to committee approval. It takes a minimum of 48 hours to process any application.
  • All relevant information and documents will be displayed on the website www.miltonabbotcentenary.club

2. Our Home

  • We're delighted to call Milton Abbot Village Hall our regular meeting place.
  • The Village Hall has generously agreed to a year of fixed rates to help us get established in our first year - let's show them our appreciation by looking after our space!
  • Please sign in when you arrive and tidy up before you leave.
  • Feel free to bring guests along - just introduce them around. The charge is £1 per guest, per visit and this money gets donated to the Village Hall charity.

3. The Bar

  • Bar prices are set to recover costs, not to produce any annual profit - we're here for enjoyment, not to run a business.
  • Our selection of drinks will be chosen to meet members' needs while balancing commercial considerations and practicality. We’ll accommodate non-drinkers’ choices too of course.
  • Suggestions for what to stock are always welcome - just have a word with whoever's behind the bar.

4. Being Convivial

  • Treat everyone with friendliness and respect - that's what conviviality is all about.
  • Disagree if you must but keep it good-natured.
  • We're here to enjoy ourselves, not to cause grief for each other or our neighbours.
  • Contravention of these guidelines could result in suspension or removal of your membership.

5. Getting Together

  • Initially, we'll host events monthly on a chosen Friday evening between 7pm and 11pm.
  • Keep an eye out for announcements about which Friday each month.
  • We're planning to host musical events in due course - if you play an instrument or know someone who does, let us know!
  • We can shoot pool, play ping pong, skittles, and just drink and chat!
  • Got an idea for an event? Brilliant! Share it with the committee or just organize it yourself.
  • We'll hold a proper Annual General Meeting once a year (probably with tea and biscuits).
  • As a member, you’ll help to run the club at least one evening per year.

6. The Committee

  • A small committee keeps things organized: Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and a few helpers.
  • These brave souls are elected at the end of each year at the AGM. (after initial selection/volunteers)
  • They're here to help, not to boss people about.

7. Money Matters

  • The Treasurer keeps track of our funds and lets everyone know how we're doing.
  • Please pay your membership fees and settle any tabs promptly - it makes their life easier!
  • Club money gets spent on club activities and keeping the place running.
  • We’re going to be cashless for simpler bookkeeping and no cash insurance liability.

8. Changing the Rules

  • These rules aren't set in stone. If something needs changing, bring it to a meeting.
  • We'll vote on it, and if most people agree, we'll make it happen.

9. Most Importantly

  • Have fun, make friends, and enjoy being part of Milton Abbot's newest social tradition!
  • This is a club run by members. We are all volunteers, so please be mindful of that fact! Hopefully we’ll still be here in the next 100 years.
